1/16" is 7 x 7 flexible control cable (7 strands of seven wires each)
Used for control purposes where extreme flexibility is not really a requirement, but where abrasion is a factor.
The 3/32 and 1/8 control cable is 7 x 19 (7 seven strands of 19 wires each) 
Suited in areas where abrasion is not to severe.  This is the most flexible of the control cables.
